Residents Group Board Meets This Morning; Zoning Code Likely To Be Discussed

The Corona del Mar Residents Association board will hold its monthly meeting at 7:30 a.m. today, when they likely will discuss Tuesday’s City Council Study Session discussions about changes to the residential Zoning Code.

The City Council decided on Tuesday to accept a staff report on Zoning Code changes, although they asked staff to remove the reports suggested limits on basements.

City Councilwoman Nancy Gardner was the only Council Member who wanted to keep those basement limits, saying that many residents are concerned about traffic and parking being affected if people can build huge underground spaces.

City Councilwoman Leslie Daigle said at the Study Session that she didn’t think more basement square footage meant more people would reside in a home.

“The largest homes I’ve been in in the community have been occupied by two people,” she said.

Other council members said that the cost of digging basements likely would keep most people from creating vast underground spaces.

CdMRA President Karen Tringali attended the Study Session, where the group presented recent survey results on the Zoning Code. The survey’s results showed that many Corona del Mar residents were unclear on what the changes mean, and that there was no clear majority in support of the changes. (A third supported the changes, a third did not, and a third said they were neutral, with respondents in the Flower Streets less likely to support the changes.)

The topic is likely to come up at today’s meeting as part of the City Council reports, Tringali said.

The CdMRA meeting, which will be held at the Newport Beach Country Club at 1600 East Coast Highway, also will feature a guest speaker from the Oasis Center and reports from local representatives from the Parks, Beaches and Recreation Commission as well as the Planning Commission.
